TEENAGER Josh McCarthy gave Tony O’Shea a fright in the final match of Oxfordshire’s Premier Division clash with Cheshire.

The 17-year-old won the first two legs, but the Silverback, three-times runner-up in the BDO World Championship, roared back to win 4-3 and hand Cheshire a 19-17 victory.

The result left Oxon 14 points adrift at the bottom of the table and facing an uphill struggle to avoid relegation with three fixtures remaining.

The visitors had been in front for most of the two days at Rudheath Social Club, near Northwich.

Shirley Castle led the way as the ladies B won 5-1.

Both the men’s B and ladies A drew their contests, giving Oxon a 14-10 advantage heading into the men’s A matches.

The lead quickly vanished as the first four matches went to Cheshire, before Ade Larner stopped the rot.

The hosts won the next two, but Sam Holley levelled.

Man-of-the-match Dennis Smith did likewise two matches later, but hopes of a first win ended when Dean Lockyer lost 4-0, before McCarthy’s late heartbreak.
