Gordon Neilson, who once received drinks on the cricket field from two former Test players, is the new men’s captain at Frilford Heath.

“I was playing for Oxfordshire Over 50s against Warwickshire and was amazed to see the drinks being brought on by former England player Alan Oakman and the Pakistan star Mushtaq Mohammed,” he said.

Neilson, who was an all-rounder at Cumnor “before my knee gave up and I couldn’t bowl” also played cricket at the Kensington Oval Test ground on a tour of the West Indies.

But golf is Neilson’s sole sporting preoccupation now now, as he plays off a nine handicap.

“I gave up cricket ten years ago because of my dodgy knee,” said the 64-year-old.

As a cricketer, he would have been used to the torrential rain which came as he drove into office on Sunday.

He still managed a drive measured at 224 metres.

By contrast, the sun shone when the new ladies’ captain, Maureen Seward, drove in at the end of a successful centenary year for their section.

Seward, who has recorded four holes-in-one, plays off 13 handicap, one better than husband Ian, who is also a member.

Both captains have named Young Dementia UK as their chosen charity.
