ORGANISERS hope to reschedule the Oxfordshire Cross Country Championships which were postponed due to the wet weather.

One potential option is for the event to be held jointly with the final round of the Oxford Mail League at RAL Harwell on Sunday, March 2.

The event was due to take place alongside round three of the Oxford Mail League at the new venue of Fir Tree Farm, Warmington, near Banbury on Sunday.

But heavy rain plus health and safety concerns put paid to that.

The race was also due to be Oxfordshire’s Inter-County Championships trial.

Oxfordshire AA chairman John Sear said: “Selection for Inter-Counties teams, which have to be submitted in the next ten or so days, will be based on performances to date this season.

“I have asked clubs to let me know the names of athletes who should be considered.”

Sunday’s meeting may have been postponed, but the wet weather could not stop Oxfordshire’s two 5km parkruns from taking place.

The Abingdon event was run on its slightly longer, but drier route and won by Owen Stepney (Abingdon AC) in 18mins 15secs.

Over in Oxford, even the ‘drier’ winter route resembled a cross country course.

Oxford City’s Matthieu Marshall, who would most likley have been battling Stepney for the county under 20 title, came home first in 18.34.

Meanwhile, Sam Cruickshank claimed victory in the Rother Valley Parkrun while on holiday near Sheffield.

The Woodstock Harriers athlete clocked 18.53.
