WARREN Jones hit a hat-trick as Oxford City Stars got revenge for a league defeat to Slough Jets by cruising to an 11-5 victory in the National League South Division 2 Cup.

The result maintained their perfect record in the competition and means one win from the final three games will send Darren Elliott’s men to finals weekend.

Slough had won the league game 5-3 a fortnight earlier, but Stars, playing at home, were quickly on the front foot.

They took advantage of an early powerplay, with Elliott setting up Alan Green to open the scoring in the third minute.

Another Jets penalty was quickly punished by Josh Oliver after good work from Andy Cox and Sam Arnold.

Josh Condren pulled one back for Jets, but goals from Jones and Joe Oliver in the space of 30 seconds gave the hosts a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period.

The second frame saw the visitors reduce the deficit through Liam Underdown, before the crucial phase of the match.

Stars rallied to smash four goals in six minutes, all but securing the victory.

Josh Oliver, Green and Jones all struck their second goals of the night, while Elliott also got on the score sheet.

With two seconds of the period remaining Nathan Darmanin made it 8-3, but the game was effectively over.

Unsurprisingly the home side’s intensity dropped a little when play restarted, but they were still able to create chances.

Slough captain Graham Bellamy made it 8-4, but Andy Cox quickly restored the five-goal cushion from the blue line.

They reached double figures when Jones completed his hat-trick and Joe Oliver completed the haul with Stars’ 11th and his second goal of the night.

Ben Ealey-Newman had the final word for Slough, but it remained a thumping victory.

It put Stars in pole position to reach finals weekend, which will be played on home ice in March.
