Didcot Town matched Cirencester Town for an hour before the Calor League Division 1 South & West leaders pulled away for a comfortable 3-1 home victory.

The Railwaymen came closest to scoring in an uneventful first half, when Josh Baines’s shot was tipped over the bar by home keeper Glyn Garner.

Cirencester did not look like scoring before taking the lead with a fortuitous goal.

Steve Davies’s cross lacked direction until it deflected off a Didcot boot straight into the path of Aidan Bennett, who made no mistake from ten yards.

Cirencester continued to apply pressure, culminating in a second goal when Sean Wood’s free-kick was not cleared, allowing Bennett to bury the ball past Didcot keeper Alex Williams.

Davies hit the bar before Cirencester added a third goal, which Williams would like to forget.

The keeper swiped at thin air when attempting to clear Davies’s punt forward from the half-way line, and substitute Shayne Bumphrey ran the ball into the empty net.

Didcot pulled a goal back in added time when Ben Whitehead scored his fourth goal in five matches since moving from Swindon Supermarine after collecting a throw by Joe Parish.
