RUGBY UNION: Alchester aces boost their survival hopes
12:00pm Thursday 31st October 2013 in Sport
Alchester emerged 40-24 winners from their Southern Counties North basement battle at home to Swindon College Old Boys.
Returning fly half Tom Miles put Alchester ahead with a penalty, but two tries, the second an interception effort from Adam Thompson’s loose pass, and a conversion put Swindon 12-3 up.
Back-row forward Thompson made amends with a try that Miles converted.
Alchester led 18-12 at half-time, with Miles slotting a penalty and Robin Tyreman going over.
A penalty try and conversion saw Swindon regain the lead, but Alchester replied.
Adam White scored twice in quick succession, followed by a try from centre partner Matt Flegg, with Miles converting two to lead 37-19.
Swindon managed a fourth try, but Miles’s penalty wrapped up the win.
Bicester earned a morale-boosting 39-17 victory at Slough – having had to give Chipping Norton a walkover in the Oxfordshire Shield last week.
Victory saw them climb from tenth to seventh in the BB&O Premier Division.
Full back Joshua Young, hooker Jake Holdsworth and wing Will Hammond went over in the first half for Bicester, with fly half Steve Risbridger converting one and adding a penalty for a 20-7 lead.
Bicester had Young sin-bined, but pulled clear with prop Dave Behan, No 8 Dan Spencer and centre James Holton scoring further tries, with Risbridger converting two.
