ATHLETICS: England maps out big year ahead
HANNAH England is confident she can challenge for European and Commonwealth medals next year after a strong 2013 season.
The 26-year-old, from Oxford, finished fourth in the 1,500m at this summer’s World Championships in Moscow and believes she can twice go better in 2014.
With the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from July 23 to August 3 quickly followed by the European Championships in Zurich (August 12-17), Oxford City AC star England will have a busy schedule.
“My first target for 2014 is to aim for a 3k personal best indoors,” said England.
“Following that, everything will be aimed towards the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.
“In Moscow, I was the second European and second Commonwealth athlete, which gives me a lot of confidence looking forward to the summer.
“I am really looking forward to the Commonwealths, being another chance to compete at a major championships in Britain.”
England’s fourth place in Moscow backed up her world silver medal in 2011, but she feels there is more to come.
“I was very pleased with my performance in Moscow,” she said. “I think I managed to produce my best performance of the year on the biggest stage, which is very satisfying.
“I would have like to have performed a bit better in my other races throughout the year and I’m hoping to improve on my consistency next year.”
England plans to train at her Birmingham base until Christmas before heading off to Florida.
“I am currently trying to get back into the routine of winter training,” she said.
“It’s hard to get my body used to full training, but I’m enjoying it and looking forward to working hard all winter ready for next summer,”
England added: “Typically, January can have some really bad weather which can be very disruptive to training.
“So I’m hoping I’ll avoid this by going to Florida and be able to prepare for a few indoor races from there.”
