HOCKEY: Bicester bring derby rivals down to earth
11:00am Thursday 24th October 2013 in Sport
Bicester men made it back-to-back wins with an impressive 4-2 home victory against Banbury 2nd at The Coopers’s School in MBB&O Division 1 on Saturday.
It followed last week’s dominant win against Maidenhead.
The hosts started the stronger and only a top display from Banbury keeper Scott Reynolds prevented them going ahead.
However, Bicester kept up the pressure and broke the deadlock when Jonny Reid picked up a loose ball in the D before lashing a shot into the bottom corner past Reynolds.
Reid soon doubled their lead after fastening onto a through ball from CJ Birtles and rounded the Reynolds before slotting into an open net.
But Bicester relaxed, allowing Banbury to level with two quick strikes.
After the break, Bicester came out of the traps quickly and restored their lead.
Martyn Southam’s pass found Reid, who cut the ball back for Stuart Moore to finish into the bottom corner. And victory was sealed when Stuart Goodacre broke forward before smashing in a shot from an acute angle.
Bicester 2nd let slip the lead as they lost 6-2 at Division 5 promotion favourites Milton Keynes 4th.
The visitors started in determined mood and took the lead after five minutes, when midfielder Justin Temple burst down the left before finding an unmarked Chris Birch.
Although his initial shot was saved, Mike Bywater coolly slotted home the rebound.
However, the home side hit back in style to lead 3-1.
Bicester clawed a goal back when Temple’s cross was met by Stu Duggan who fired into the top corner.
But that was as good as it got for Bicester as Milton Keynes took control with three second-half goals.
Jason Crook scored a double on his debut as Bicester 3rd strolled to a 4-1 home win against Oxford Hamsters in Open Division 8.
Bicester created several early chances, but were unable to put them away before Crook fired the hosts ahead with a close-range shot.
In the second half, a slick penalty corner routine was finished by Nick Stiles, who then doubled his tally after a superb passing move.
Oxford pulled a goal back, but Crook completed his brace with a well struck reverse stick strike from the edge of the D.
Bicester ladies had to settle for a 2-2 draw at home to unbeaten Amersham & Chalfont in Trysports Three Counties League Premier 1.
With minutes left and leading 2-1 Bicester looked like holding on, only for a late leveller to deny them victory.
Bicester started well, only to go behind early on.
But they recovered their composure and equalised when Lilla Venning got on the end of a goalbound shot from Ella Weston.
And it got better for the home side when Kath Crook put them ahead following a swift break.
Then came Amersham’s late goal.
Bicester 3rd crashed 3-0 at Wychwood 2nd in their Division 5 encounter.
