HOCKEY: Thomas heroics are key to Bicester
1:00pm Thursday 10th October 2013 in Sport
Bicester Ladies got back to winning ways with a 2-1 home success against Bracknell in Trysports Three Counties League Premier 1 on Saturday.
It would have been a draw, but keeper Ruth Thomas made a super stop late on.
Bracknell went ahead early on, but the hosts did not let their heads drop and levelled through a fine opportunist strike from Hannah Newell.
Bicester took the lead following some great work from Ella Weston.
She burst down the wing before her super cross was swept home by Lilla Venning.
Bicester continued to dominate in the second half and managed to hold on to their lead, thanks to Thomas who stopped the ball on the Brack-nell goalline.
Sheryl Webb bagged a brace as Bicester 2nd got their season off to a flier with a 3-0 home win against Wychwood in Division 2.
The hosts dominated from the off, but it wasn’t until halfway through the opening half that they broke the deadlock.
Webb, whose pace was a constant menace to the visitors’ defence, scrambled the ball over the line from close-range as Wychwood failed to clear.
After the break, Bicester doubled their lead.
Kelly Holt ran at the Wych-wood defence before her through ball found Charlotte Cochrane, who slotted the ball under the keeper. Webb completed her brace with a chip over the keeper.
Maddy Smith scored a last-gasp winner as Bicester 3rd beat Maidenhead 4th away in Division 5.
Smith’s first goal for the club came after she converted the rebound after Emily Wilks’ fierce shot was saved.
Bicester Men had an MBBO Division 1 opener to forget as they lost 5-0 against Oxford Hawks 3rd.
Bicester 2nd hit back for a 2-1 home win over Wycombe 5th in Open Division 9.
The hosts’ opener was cancelled out when Nick Styles flicked home off a defender’s stick after a penalty corner.
Bicester went ahead after the break, though there was an element of good fortune.
Shaun Varney’s pass found debutant Josh Cookson, but as the Wycombe keeper char-ged out and tipped it into his own net.
Wycombe thought they had levelled, only for the effort to be disallowed.
Bicester nearly bagged a third late on when Chris Birch’s curling shot beat the keeper’s outstretched foot, only to hit a post.
