FOOTBALL: Brooks on target as Ardley go third
10:00am Thursday 10th October 2013 in Sport
Ardley United moved up to third place in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division with a 2-1 home victory against Reading Town on Tuesday.
In a tough encounter at Oxford Road, it was Kevin Brock’s side who just had the edge.
Reading started the stron-ger, with keeper Tom McNa-mara, who was making his debut for the home side, brought into action into the action early on.
Graham Lewis was causing Ardley’s defence problems on the left. But they weathered the storm and began to impose themselves. And on 27 minutes they made the breakthrough.
A diagonal ball from the right found Ryan Brooks on the left edge of the box and he fired across keeper Nathan Silver to score his 16th league goal of the season.
Ardley kept up the pressure, but were unable to add to their tally.
After the break, Ardley kept going forward and Howkins should have doubled the lead on 87 minutes after being put through on goal by Troy Bryan.
However, the striker fired wide after cutting inside.
A minute later, Ardley scored their second goal.
Howkins burst into the area where he was brought down by Danny Horscroft, with Callum Convey scoring the resulting penalty.
Six minutes into injury- time, Reading clawed a goal back when Frankie Boamah’s shot beat McNamara before going in off a post.
Reading piled forward in the hope of an equaliser, but Ardley saw the game out without too much difficulty.
On Saturday, Ardley travel to Oxford City Nomads.
