MOTORSPORT: Plato dismisses title talk ahead of Silverstone bid
10:00am Saturday 28th September 2013 in Sport
Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship
Oxford's Jason Plato has written off his chances of securing a third title as the penultimate round takes place at Silverstone tomorrow.
The two-time champion stands in fifth spot, 62 points behind championship leader Andrew Jordan.
Pole position and a podium in the last round at Rockingham proved the pace of the MG KX Momentum Racing in clear conditions.
And with six races to run, the top five in the championship are all still able to take the title But Plato is fairly dismissive of his chances.
“Realistically, we’re too far away from the top to be thinking about the championship,” he said.
“It would require everyone ahead of us to have a disaster and that simply isn’t going to happen. “The most important thing for us is to keep learning about the car, and hopefully get some more wins before the end of the year.”
However, his rivals are refusing to rule him out.
Reigning champion Gordon Shedden said: “You definitely can’t write Jason Plato off – he’ll be there or thereabouts come the end.
“He is a way off, but if someone at the front has a bad race and doesn’t score any points then someone like Jason will capitalise and make massive inroads – it can all change so quickly.”
Plato can also take encouragement from his performance last year at what he regards as his home track.
He scored a double win, which included an incredible surge from 20th on the grid to take victory in the final race.
Standings: 1 A Jordan 338pts, 2 G Shedden 308, 3 C Turkington 305, 4 M Neal 304, 5 J Plato 276, 6 S Tordoff 218, 7 A Morgan 190, 8 M Jackson 162, 9 R Austin 150, 10 A Smith 133.
