ANGLING: Kirk lands FTB Open
10:00am Saturday 28th September 2013 in Sport
Martin Kirk took the honours in the FTB tackle shop Open, fished by 54 anglers on the Folly and Donnington stretches of the Thames.
Despite a multitude of rowing boats and canoes, plus walkers and cyclists, the venues fished well and plenty of roach were caught, although the bream did not show in numbers.
Kirk (Sensas A4) drew in the deep water at Folly and fished his favourite chopped worm on the pole with worm on the hook to tempt four decent skimmers and some quality roach and perch for a winning 25.4.0.
He picked up a handy £540 thanks to the sponsorship from the Marston-based tackle shop.
Runner-up Paul Glenfield (Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths) drew the last peg on the green bank at Donnington, catching around 100 roach up to 1lb on pole and maggot over groundbait feed for 17.6.0.
Teammate Carl Eland had a bream, plus roach, for 14.11.0 and third.
The fourth and final 40-hour match was fished at Abingdon & Oxford Anglers Alliance’s Marlborough Pool, near Cassington, and although the attendance was poor, there were lots of fish caught.
Bream, tench, carp and pike all counted, but it was the big carp that sealed the honours for Dave Waddle with 93.8.0.
This included five carp, two over the magic 20lb mark, and four big bream, all caught on boilies.
Geoff Waddle targeted the big bream during the day and the carp at night. He had a single carp, two tench and 11 bream for 76.12.0, while Tim Couling caught two bream and a small tench for third.
There were still plenty of boats on the Oxford Canal on Sunday, but Kidlington AS’s Paul Jackman Cup at Grovelands nevertheless produced some decent weights.
A bag of perch, skimmers and roach on the pole with chopped worm and caster earned Barry Smith top spot with 11.8.0.
A 3lb chub, plus roach on pole and caster, gave Terry Lester second place with 6.0.0, followed by Henry Clarke with 5.2.0. He had a 2lb bream and roach.
Points (after 6 matches): 1 J Bean 39, 2= T Lester, H Clarke 31, 3 D Foreshew 26.
