TRIATHLON: Bell's on song in capital
10:00am Saturday 21st September 2013 in Sport
World Age Group Championships
JANE Bell led the way for Oxford Triathlon Club’s representatives in London’s Hyde Park with a double medal haul.
Competing in the 55-59 year-old ladies’ category, Bell scooped gold in the aquathlon – swim followed by a run – and bronze in the sprint triathlon which is a 750m swim, 20km bike and a 5km run.
The age group championships were held at the same venue as the ITU World Triathlon Series final, which saw Non Stanford crowned ladies’ champion, but fellow Brit Jonny Brownlee edged out in a sprint finish for the men’s prize.
It also saw triathlon return to the London 2012 Olympic course as amateur athletes rubbed shoulders with the best in the world.
In the aquathlon, Bell took victory in 39mins 33secs, just seven seconds ahead of USA’s Ellen Hart, who almost chased her down in the run.
Hart then got revenge by taking silver to Bell’s bronze in the triathlon, with Bell clocking 1hr 20mins 56secs.
Janette Cardy finished fifth in the 40-44 age group of the aquathlon, while Hannah Kitchen came fourth in the under 23 category.
Verity Westgate, who last year carried the Olympic torch through Kidlington, finished 44th in the 25-29 category.
In the Olympic distance triathlon, Rachel Hallam battled a sickness bug to finish sixth in the 25-29 category and 28th overall.
Hallam clocked 2.03.01 for the 1,500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run course.
Anna Jenkins came tenth in the 30-34 age group and 30th overall, clocking 2.03.08.
Hannah Larbalestier took 30th position in the 20-24 category of the sprint distance triathlon.
Nick Twist, of Boars Hill, finished 54th in the 60-64 Olympic distance event.
Other Oxfordshire competitors in Hyde Park included Elysia Ridley, who finished 12th in the 25-29 ladies’ Olympic triathlon.
The Witney Road Runners athlete, from Ascott-under-Wychwood, recorded a time of 2.04.47.
