ATHLETICS: County veterans secure five British gold medals
FOUR Oxfordshire athletes struck gold in the British Masters Athletic Federation (BMAF) Track & Field Championships at Birmingham’s Alexandra Stadium.
Radley sprinter Kay Reynolds led the way with a golden double, winning the vet 40 ladies’ 80m hurdles and 100m.
Clubmate Jan Ellacott won the vet 50 ladies’ 400m, while Oxford City’s Les Newell claimed the vet 35 men’s 1,500m title.
Completing the set was City’s Claire Lacey, who won the vet 35 ladies’ javelin.
Reynolds won the 80m hurdles in 12.43secs and added the 100m crown in 13.84.
Ellacott took the 400m in 1.07.64 after second places in the 100m (14.42) and 200m (30.30).
Newell was agonisingly close to a golden double himself.
Having won the 1,500m in 4mins 11.48secs, he was just 0.05 secs off gold in the 800m.
Newell recorded 2.02.20 to winner Paul Harmer’s 2.02.15.
He followed this up two days later by winning a 5,000m race at Radley College in a personal best time of 15mins 50.1secs.
Lacey took her javelin title with a throw of 26.25m and was second in the discus with 21.04.
There were two further silvers for Oxon competitors.
Radley’s Lyn Ahmet was runner-up in the vet 60 ladies’ triple jump with a leap of 7.10m.
City’s Margaret Coombe was second in the same event for vet 65 ladies, recording 5.72.
