RUGBY UNION: Thompson's late try seals victory
12:00pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Sport
Alchester battled back to edge out visitors Wallingford 27-22 in their opening Southern Counties fixture, thanks to a late try from Adam Thompson.
The hosts had trailed 19-3, but sealed victory when No 8 Thompson was driven over in the dying minutes and centre Adam White converted.
Wallingford took the lead on ten minutes with a try from Dan Sadler, converted by Ralph Smith.
Alchester stayed in touch with a penalty by fly half Tom Barnes.
Tries from James Norris and Smith, who added a conversion, put the visitors well in control.
Barnes slotted a second penalty, but Luke Best’s drop goal kept Wallingford 16 points ahead.
It was only in the final quarter that Alchester gained the ascendancy, with flanker Matt Beckley scoring their first try, converted by Barnes.
With ten minutes left, wing Souava Rakikiki shrugged off three defenders to charge in from 20 metres.
White converted as Barnes had been sin-binned for a late tackle.
Man-of-the-match Thompson had the final say from a driving maul.
Meanwhile, Bicester won 36-19 at Farnham Royal in BB& O Premier Division.
But Bicester lost lock Chris Clayton and No 8 Matt Duncalf with broken collar bones.
Wing Simon Poole and Duncalf grabbed Bicester’s opening tries, with fly half Steve Risbridger converting both.
Farnham replied with a try from Rob Freeman, converted by Tom Boardman.
Poole went over for his second, but Freeman also doubled up, Boardman again converting.
Centre Dan Spencer (2) and Duncalf completed Bicester’s tally, Risbridger converting the first.
Bicester had centre Steve Miller yellow-carded before Lee Bailey scored a late try for Farnham.
