GOLF: Simpson's fast finish nets Lombard reward
5:17pm Monday 9th September 2013 in Sport
AN EAGLE at the final hole gave Paul Simpson a share of third place at the Lombard Trophy.
The Witney professional and playing partner Richard Muldoon (West Berks) made up four strokes in the closing four holes at Gleneagles to storm up the leaderboard.
Their efforts in Europe’s biggest pro-am earned prize money of £4,500.
The pair had come through regional qualifying to reach the 36-hole tournament, played on the Centenary course which will host next year’s Ryder Cup.
A dropped shot at the first was their only bogey in an excellent opening round of four-under 68, which put them in contention.
The second round was in danger of petering out as three birdies were cancelled out by a hat-trick of bogeys up to the 14th, but the superb finish catapulted the pair up the standings.
