GOLF: Pepperell in return drive after making surprise cut
9:40am Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in Sport
EDDIE Pepperell was involved in a surprise U-turn after incorrectly believing he had missed the cut at the ISPS Handaw Wales Open.
The Frilford Heath golfer finished his second round at lunchtime on Friday.
Stuck at four-over par he expected his tournament was over, so headed from Celtic Manor back home to Abingdon.
But tough scoring in the afternoon saw the 22-year-old sneak in by a shot.
He said: “I thought I’d come home, I didn’t expect to make it because I thought the cut would be at three-over.
“It was a nice surprise to be driving back down, but it didn’t help my preparation.
“I should have stayed down there.”
A level par round of 71 on Saturday kept Pepperell in the mix, but a poor final round of 79 saw him slip to a share of 68th place.
The European Tour rookie flew to Switzerland yesterday ahead of the Omega European Masters.
The Crans-sur-Sierre greens are renowned for their difficulty and Pepperell knows it is an area which needs work.
He said: “The theme for the last couple of weeks has been not putting very well.
“I’m going to be working hard on that over the next couple of tournaments and if I can get that going I think I’ll be right up there.”
