FOOTBALL: Banbury suffer last-gasp agony
11:00am Monday 2nd September 2013 in Sport
Banbury United suffered last-gasp agony as they went down to a 2-1 injury-time defeat at Spencer Stadium on Saturday.
The result condemmed Banbury to their third Calor League Premier Division defeat.
With the game going into injury time, Banbury had hopes of holding on for a point after Kynan Isaac cancelled out Alex Ferguson’s opener, but Connor Waldron put paid to that.
Banbury started the brighter and almost went ahead on eight minutes.
Isaac’s cross found Adeyinka Talabi, but his shot was blocked. Banbury continued to dominate, with Tom Ryan’s header going narrowly past the far post.
The hosts had a lucky escape when Ferguson hit the Banbury bar.
However, they did not heed the warning and Frome went ahead five minutes before half-time.
Ferguson broke through the Banbury defence before lifting the ball over Ben McNamara from just outside the penalty area.
Banbury went close to levelling a minute after the re-start.
Isaac cut inside and saw Darren Chitty palm away his shot.
Banbury pushed for an equaliser and it arrived 11 minutes from time.
Isaac ran on to a through ball, outpacing a Frome defender before lobbing the advancing Chitty from the edge of the penalty area.
Two minutes, Chitty denied Adeyinka Talabi with a super save.
But a minute into stoppage time, Waldron headed in the winner for Frome to ruin Banbury’s day.
Banbury Utd: McNamara, Blossom, Westwood, Bridges, Mbamarah, Ryan, Talabi, Fraser-Allen, Menezes (Pinto 63), Isaac, Morgan (Soetan 90). Subs not used: McNulty, Kemoagna, Martin.
