ROWING: Chambers brothers off to flier
10:00am Monday 26th August 2013 in Sport
Former Oxford Brookes University duo Richard and Peter Chambers sealed a comfortable heat victory on the opening day of the World Championships in South Korea.
The GB pair, who originate from Coleraine, Northern Ireland, won their lightweight double sculls heat in 6mins 34.83sec, more than 17 seconds clear of Greece.
“We pretty much expected them (Greece) to be with us to 1k and then we moved on a bit in the third 500m, we waited to see if they would stick with us,” said Peter Chambers. “That was a good start and something we can build on.”
Fellow GB rower Alan Campbell had over three seconds to spare in his single sculls heat.
The women’s pair, of debutant Polly Swann, from the Leander club in Henley and Olympic champion Helen Glover progressed in their heat.
Oxford’s Kathryn Twyman teamed up with Imogen Walsh to progress in the lightweight women’s double sculls.
The men’s quadruple scull also won in high temperatures.
They were joined by the men’s four, who made it through in second place after a fine final 500m.
