CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Ton-up Hammers storm to victory
12:00pm Saturday 17th August 2013 in Sport
Horspath Hammers recovered from a shaky start to trounce Sheffield Stars 100-79 in their Elite League home clash.
When Sheffield’s Polish stars Pawel Idziorek and Radek Handke shot out the gate for an opening heat 7-3, it looked like being a tight encounter, even though Stars were short of a rider or two.
However, a 6-4 and two 7-3s later Hammers were on a charge.
A no-holds barred heat three saw Sheffield’s British champion Andy Angell hit the deck in a tussle with former champion Mark Boaler, while the impressive Zac Payne took heat four.
Sheffield had the star of the match in Pawel Idziorek, whose clashes with Lukasz Nowacki and Mark Boaler were the highlights of the match.
The young Sheffield rider eventually took the match race trophy from reigning world champion Nowacki.
Idziorek’s main backing came from Jamie Ball and Radek Hanke – who both deserved more points.
Sheffield’s Andy Angell, on a track not suited to him, looked race-rusty, while both Ryan Hoyland and Dan Chambers battled hard against a home side now in full flow.
For Horspath, Matti Szymczak, after a first bend fall first race, showed that after a slow start to the season, he is now back to speed, with Payne again in good form.
Only six points separated the teams after seven heats, but a run of four 6-4s either side of the break helped the Hammers to an unexpected three-figure total.
Horspath: M Boaler 16+1, L Nowacki 15+1, L Bates 15, M Szymczak 13+3, J Harrold 12+1, M Carmichael 12, Z Payne 9, E Thaw 8.
Sheffield: P Idziorek 17, Rk Handke 12+2, J Ball 11, A Angell 11, D Chambers 11, R Hoyland 10, M Whitehead 4, K Holland 3.
