HEAD coach Lyn Jones has strongly hinted he would leave London Welsh if they do not stay in Oxford.

Welsh ended their one-year Aviva Premiership stay with a 33-22 win over Worcester Warriors at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

The board – none of whom would talk to media at the weekend – have yet to announce where the club will play next season after being relegated back to the Championship.

And Jones, who said pre-match that he felt staying in the city was vital, reiterated those views after the final whistle.

“If London Welsh are serious about their ambitions, I certainly hope that Oxford will be home,” he said.

“I have made it quite clear to everybody involved in running the club that you have got to have a vision, ambition and a plan to back it up.

“I don’t mean a six-month plan. I mean a three-year plan.”

He added: “I have found out how difficult it is to run a team without an academy.

“One thing that London Welsh can do is start an academy and come to Oxford to live.

“There is a big population and there are a lot of young boys who are keen to become professional rugby players, who have got too far to go.”

Jones, who has been nominated for Aviva Premiership coach of the year, has done his prospects no harm by the way he has led Welsh this season.

He stressed his own desire to stay with the Exiles next year – but says it is now down to others.

“As long as the board at London Welsh show a vision and ambition to come back up and take on board the lessons learnt from playing with the big boys in English rugby, we’ll come back better,” he said.

“Will I be there next year? I certainly hope I will be, but only if there is vision and ambition. Otherwise I think we are all wasting our time.”
