SWIMMING: Bluefins strike gold in Wales

Bicester Bluefins bagged seven gold medals at the Wales Open Masters Championships in Swansea.

Ryan Steward led the way with three individual victories in the 25-29 age group.

Paul Davis (45-49) bagged two golds and Andy Smith (25-29) one, while Bicester completed their set with a relay title in the 120 years plus category.

Steward took the 50m breastroke in 31.90secs, the 100m breaststroke in 1min 14.56secs and the 100m freestyle in 57.00.

Davis’s double came in the 50 and 100m breaststroke events where his respective times were 36.36 and 1.26.22.

Smith won the 50m backstroke in 32.55.

Francis Varney (25-29) joined up with Smith, Steward and Davis to claim gold in the 200m medley relay in 2.07.74.

Smith secured 50m butterfly silver (29.76), with Varney (30.44) taking bronze.

And the pair repated that combination behind Steward in the 100m freetyle, clocking 59.06 and 1.02.75 respectively.

Steward (34.55) took silver behind Smith in the 50m backstroke, while Varney added 50m freestyle silver in 28.08.

Bicester’s David Cronin (25-29) took silver in the 100m breastroke (1.31.54).

Davis added bronze in the 100m freestyle (1.13.18).
