Abingdon United paid the price for a lacklustre first-half display as they went down to a 2-0 home defeat in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West on Saturday.

The hosts were looking to end a winless run of five games, but served up a poor display.

Abingdon were caught cold when Cirencester went ahead when Shane Bumphrey’s cross found Ben Wells, who headed past James Foster in the Abingdon goal from eight yards out.

A stunned Abingdon almost went 2-0 down, but Foster made a fine diving save from Wells.

Matt Biddle almost levelled when he raced onto a Carl Self flick-on and lobbed keeper Glyn Garner, but his effort to over.

Cirencester doubled their advantage when former Abingdon United striker Sam Collier cracked home a spectacular shot over Foster and into the net from 35 yards out.

In the second half, Abingdon upped the tempo, but never looked like cutting the deficit.

Biddle went close with a header from Kevin Halliday’s cross, but that was that.

Late on, Wells almost made it 3-0, but the damage was done.

Abingdon Utd: Foster, Booker, Thomas, James, Halliday, Melledew, Biddle, Self (Christodolou 72), Tucker (Riccio H-T), Woodley, Davis (Nowell 65). Subs not used: Evans, Bourne.

Attendance: 82.
