BOXING: Ward in national title bid
12:00pm Saturday 2nd March 2013 in Sport
Gerard Ward will not be short of support when he competes in the National Schoolboys Championships finals at Everton Park, Leisure Centre Liverpool today.
Members of Berinsfield ABC, where Ward trains, will there to cheer him on as he seeks his first national title.
The Berinsfield boxer will face Gregory Lunt, from Stoke in the eagerly-anticipated class 1 (born 2000) under 48kg final. Ward (pictured) is hoping to replicate his performance from the semi-final when he stopped Harry Needham (Ted Harris ABC).
He said: “I would like to thank all at Berinsfield for the hard work that has been put in to me, and to all my supporters for their belief and good wishes.”
April sees the start of the Junior ABA Championships, for which Berinsfield will be entering three boxers. Ciaran Flanagan, in the class 4 (born 1997), will compete with Mark McDonagh and Jordan Reilly, both of whom are in the class 5 (born 1996).
The club’s father and son coaching team of Mel and Lee Corrigan are looking for new coaches and volunteers.
Those interested should contact Mel Corrigan on 07860 156950.
Meanwhile, Bicester welterweight Daza Usher will now face light middleweight Kevin McCauley in Swindon next Saturday after his scheduled opponent, Andrew Patterson, pulled out with a back injury.
