BADMINTON: Oxon edge home in thriller

OXFORDSHIRE stormed back from 6-2 down to beat Buck-inghamshire 2nd 8-7 in a thrilling County Champion-ships Division 2C match at Eynsham.

The hosts trailed 3-1 after the singles, with Maria Ioannou their winner thanks to a 21-10, 21-11 success.

In the men’s doubles, Oxon’s Peter Frobisher and Chris Lim lost two close three-set matches, while Paul Casey and Simon Gaines picked up one on their two rubbers.

So Oxon trailed 6-2. But their ladies’ doubles partnerships brought the match level.

Sarah Torgersen and Alison Ross won both rubbers, as did Ioannou and Hannah Wilkinson. Both pairs beating the Bucks top duo in three legs.

There was all to play for going into the mixed doubles.

Ioannou and Frobisher triumphed 21-18, 21-18, but Ross and Lim were beaten.

In the tense decider, Gaines and Torgersen fought hard to 24-22, 21-15 to secure Oxon victory and boost their hopes of avoiding relegation.

  • OXFORDSHIRE under 15s finished their Shires League season with two resounding victories, beating Worcestershire 16-4 on Saturday and whitewashing Northants 20-0 the next day.

Oxon finished seventh, having only lost one match in their six-match season to earn themselves a play-off against tenth-placed Warwickshire.

Victory in this final match on at Eynsham on March 10 will earn the team a place in the national finals to be held in Hertfordshire in April.

  • JAMIE Cackett, of Abingdon, continued his fine form with two medals in the under 13 bronze tournament in Winchester.

Cackett, a pupil at Larkmead School, won the boys’ doubles with Rory Farwell (Gloucestershire) and picked up a bronze medal after reaching the semi-final of the singles.

Megan Ready of Long Wittenham, lost in the girls’ singles semi-final of the under 15 tournament in Hampshire.

Darcie Walker, of Didcot, and Molly Naylor, of Drayton, won silver medals, by reaching the final of the under 15 girls’ doubles.
