Two Bicester golfers missed out in their attempt to win the senior pairs title at the HowDidiDo National Matchplay Championships in Portugal.

David White, a 14-handicapper, and Ivan Curtis, who plays off 12 – both from Bicester GC – played five rounds of matchplay golf in the final, but finished well adrift of eventual winners David Liptrott and Jack Crompton, from Lancashire.

Their seven-day, expenses-paid trip to the Algarve comprised five rounds of golf played over the Laguna, Millennium, Old, Faldo and Victoria courses.

They were two of 32 golfers from across the UK who qualified for the grand final, which featured four competitions – singles, pairs, mixed pairs and senior pairs – for those aged 50 or more.

Each pair played up to four qualifying rounds merely to reach a regional final, with the knockout rounds taking place between June and September last year, and the regional finals in October.
