MOTORSPORT: New Williams car in exhaust controversy

THE Grove-based Williams team are seeking further clarification from the FIA with regard to a controversial design on the new car that was only launched on Tuesday.

Prior to the start of the second pre-season test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, Williams took the wraps off their FW35, but immediately walked into trouble, with the FIA suggesting the design of the exit of their exhaust is illegal.

Their car, like that of Leafield outfit Caterham, who have also been warned, has vanes the FIA say interfere with the car’s aerodynamics.

Nevertheless, boss Sir Frank Williams feels his team can will be up there this season.

He said: “I’m hoping with the team we have in place, our new FW35, the combined talent of Pastor (Maldonado), Valtteri (Bottas) and Susie (Wolff), we will be in a position to challenge the very best.”
