ATHLETICS: Bicester youngsters boost Oxfordshire

Bicester athletes played a prominent role as Oxfordshire’s girls finished fourth in the Under 11 Fun in Athletics South East Regional Sportshall final.

Amy Gould, Millie Couzens, Holly Griffiths-Brown and Lauren Garside helped Oxon to within five points of third place at the Triangle Leisure Centre, Burgess Hill.

Gould and Couzens teamed up with Maddison Cooper (Banbury) to secure maximum points and win the balance test.

Griffiths-Brown and Olivia Westbrook (Witney) secured victory in the six-lap paarlauf race, and third place in the 2+2 lap relay.

Cooper, Couzens and Holly Allen (Oxford City) then teamed up to take third place in the vertical jump.

Garside and Amelia Leondiou (Banbury) finished second in the 1+1 lap relay.

Gould, Freya Gordon-James (Radley), Jody Krumins (Witney) and Alice Hudson (Witney) came third in the obstacle relay.

Oxon finished on 380 points, with third-placed Kent on 385.

Bicester’s Tom Couzens, Josiah Edwards-Giraud, JJ Welham, Joe Liddicot and William Sims were part of the Oxfordshire boys’ team, who finished seventh on 325 points, Couzens produced a leap of 6.35m for second place in the standing triple jump.

Edwards-Giraud and William Andrews (Banbury) were also second – in the soft javelin.

Welham, Andrews and Giano Winkler (Banbury) secured fourth in the balance test.

On the track, the 1+1 lap relay pair of Liddicot and Jack Judson (Oxford City) sprinted to third place, as did Couzens and Sims (Bicester) in the 2+2 lap event.
