Dean McPhilimey stormed to a thrilling victory as his family dominated the Heavy Metal Classic at Standlake Arena.

McPhilimey, from Bourton on the Water, won the unlimited class in a Ford Ultima, with his father, Pat, third in the same model and his brother, Neil, fourth in a Bentley.

Pat, who won the event in a Jaguar in 2000, was making his first appearance in the Classic since 2001.

The McPhilimeys were only denied a one-two-three in the 12-lap final by Londoner Sonny Sherwood, who took second spot in a Ford Grenada.

Sherwood led at one stage, but got spun out before fighting his way back to be runner-up.

With a bumper crowd in attendance, victory in the under 1800cc final went to Chris Bridger, from Lifton in Devon, driving a Vauxhall Vectra.

He just held off a determined challenge from Southampton’s Matt Nutley in a Nissan 100NX, with Mark Whittaker, from Cambridgeshire, completing the podium in a Nissan Primera.

Around 180 drivers took part in 20 races.

And organiser Keith Hook said: “There was a fantastic atmosphere. Everyone loves the meeting and they come from far and wide to watch it.” The next meeting at Standlake is on February 17.
