ANGLING: Winstone's weeping willow win

After struggling the previous week on the Kidlington stretch of the Oxford Canal, North Oxford AS switched their Victory Cup match to Frenchay Road and weights were much improved.

Pegged on the favoured ‘weeping willow’ swim, Maurice Winstone caught perch to 2lb on chopped worm for a winning 7lb 0oz.

Using similar tactics, John Coleman had 6.7.0 of mainly perch for second place, while Phil Cross alternated between punch and maggot to catch skimmers and perch for third spot with 5.12.0.

Oxford Waltonians’ T Smith Cup was rearranged from the flooded River Thame to Grove Farm Lake.

Alan Gee (Acorn Angling) took the honours with 10.11.0, comprising a single carp and some perch on pole with maggot.

Graham Bowen caught a carp of 7.11.0 on feeder with prawns for second, followed by Matt Fisher (Fish Zone) with 4.11.0 of perch on chopped worm. Eleven fished.

The floods also forced Marston AC FTB to move their Hunt Edmunds Cup match from the Cherwell to the Oxford Canal at King’s Bridge where Steve Foster won his second canal match running with one nice perch and around 30 small fish for 3.7.0

A big perch of around 1½lb helped Wayne Rudman to runners-up spot with 2.2.0, and Steve Tompkins was the only other angler to hit the 2lb mark with 2lb exactly for third.

It was tough going for Tackley Sports AC on the canal at Shipton, where 15 ounces was enough to clinch victory for Anthony Alder in their latest match.

He used pole and worm to catch perch and top the ten-strong field.

Mick Merry and Frank Malone also caught perch on the same method for 12oz and 0.6.8 respectively.
