HOCKEY: Bicester's run is ended by Gerrards Cross
12:00pm Thursday 10th January 2013 in Sport
Nobby Styles scored both of Bicester 3rd's goals in their 5-2 defeat at Gerrards Cross which halted their unbeaten run
Bicester Men 3rd’s unbeaten run in MBBO Open Division 9 came to an end as the leaders went down to a 5-2 defeat away to mid-table Gerrards Cross.
The defeat still sees them four points clear at the top.
Bicester went a goal down early on, but equalised after being awarded a penalty for a foot on the line and Nobby Styles stepped up to fire the ball low into the left hand corner of the net.
Bicester then returned to a poor passing game and Gerrards Cross took full advantage with two quick goals, putting them 3-1 up.
After the break, Bicester’s defence failed to clear the ball and went 4-1 down.
The visitors did not give up and pulled a goal back when Styles flicked home from close range from a penalty corner.
Bicester suffered a blow when Trevor Joseph was suspended for five minutes for a dangerous tackle and it got worse when Bicester shipped a fifth goal.
Skipper Steve Birtles was not too downcast by the loss. He said: “If you told me we were going to be top of the league at this point having only lost one game, we would have taken it,” he said.
An injury-hit Bicester Ladies crashed to an 8-0 defeat at Amersham & Chalfont Ladies in Trysports Three Counties League Premier 1.
