Police issue prom night warning
PARENTS and teachers across the Thames Valley region are being encouraged to warn young people about the dangers of underage drinking as prom nights are approaching.
Prom night is renowned for underage drinking and young people need to remember that 18 is the legal age to purchase alcohol.
Inspector John Fox, of Thames Valley Police, said: "We are not saying don't have a great time on your prom night'. We are just saying don't drink alcohol and ruin your evening'. Parents can help their children have a great time by checking that they don't drink."
Young people who have drunk alcohol are more likely to do things they wouldn't normally do; for example have unprotected sex (which can result in pregnancy or a sexually transmitted infection). They are also more likely to be involved in dangerous situations with one third of all rapes happening when the victim has been drinking.
James Mapstone, of the South Central Strategic Health Authority, said: "Prom night should be a night to remember, however you do not want to be remembered by your friends for your embarrassing behaviour or because you left in an ambulance.
"After a night of excessive drinking you are more likely to be involved in an accident, violence or become a victim of crime, including serious sexual assault."
Every day in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight about three people under 18 are admitted to hospital as a direct result of alcohol.
Police can issue 16 and 17-year-olds with penalty notices for offences of buying or attempting to buy alcohol. These notices impose a penalty of £80.

What's all this prom night nonsense? Have we suddenly become America's 51st State? When I were a lad (9 years ago) we did our last exams and then went up the park to listen to our Phats & Small CDs with some bottles of Diamond White. We made our own fun in those days. And the internet was only available in dial-up with no Facebook.

If Prom nights are just going to be drunken nights then probably best to cancel them - although it is not fair on the kids who just want to enjoy a school leaving party/dance. My kids tell me the in thing is to get drunk beforehand and then turn up at the Prom. Stupid yes but that's the thinking - and ruins it for others.
I believe one of the Witney schools had problems with its prom night a couple fo weeks ago because of drunk teenagers trashing the premises.

Teenagers are susceptible to marketing and peer pressure, have 'pester power' and are generally indulged and spoilt by their parents, who see consumer goods as a substitute for good parenting.
Add to this the PC liberal left 'empowering' young people ('children' is like- [bold]SO[/bold] patronising!)and you've got a society where teenagers think and indeed can do what the hell they like, because parents have kidded themselves that they can be teenagers themselves forever and can be 'mates' with their offspring rather than setting boundaries, being a good example and spending time to teach them basic right and wrong.
The Police have no authority, we have mickey mouse 'chidren's commissioners' saying that searching a child for a knife may 'offend them' (Why is it that the only taboo left in society, the [bold]ONE[/bold] thing you [bold]CANNOT[/bold] do is [bold]OFFEND[/bold] someone?!!)and a raft of do- gooders constantly undermining any authority in this Country and a group of underage teenagers getting p*ssed is the least of our worries.
Despairing as I am of the behaviour of a (minority) of young people, perhaps this should be seen in the context of the 'trashings' of Oxford students- the future captains of industry, politicians and parents.
This is all down to one group of people believing they are 'grown up' when they clearly aren't, and the people who [bold]SHOULD[/bold] be grown up acting like perpetual toddlers.
Britain has become the laughing stock of the World.
