Post offices start to close
TWO post offices in The Herald area - at Dalton Barracks, near Abingdon, and Fyfield - will close their doors on Thursday and the days of the rest are numbered.
The Post Office has given the closure dates for all 22 in the county and the vast majority will close within the next week.
Crowmarsh post office is scheduled to stay open at least August to until some decision is made on a permanent site for Wallingford's post office. Crowmarsh is closing, despite a long hard battle by local campaigners, because it is within a mile of Wallingford's post office.
But Wallingford's is in a temporary cabin and cannot cope with the extra load that would be imposed by the closure immediately of Crowmarsh. Upton is to close on June 9, Ardington and Childrey on June 11, Long Wittenham in August or September, and Wootton Road, Abingdon, in October.
Post Office spokesman Jane Thomas said the timings were done in conjunction with local postmasters.
She said: "It came down to personal choice. It was a case of coming up with a timescale that suited postmasters and their future prospects.
"We asked for an indication of whether they preferred to close within a month or within three.
"It just happens that most people have chosen one month."
More of Oxfordshire's post offices could close if the fears of MPs and experts are realised.
A business and enterprise select committee's report, released on Monday, warned 4,000 extra branches - on top of the 2,500 already doomed - could be axed nationwide.
