THOUSANDS of petrol heads poured into Bicester's former RAF bomber station site to celebrate the final Sunday Scramble of the year.

Classic car and aviation enthusiasts revved into the Bicester Heritage site built at former RAF Bicester on Sunday.

It marked the final scramble event for 2017 and attracted more than 3,000 people through its gates to enjoy a host of historic vehicles that were on show.

Bicester Heritage managing director Dan Geoghegan said: "We were delighted to introduce thousands of motoring enthusiasts, families and local residents to our community of automotive craftsman and apprentices.

"With the restored bomber station buildings and autumnal tree lined avenues, it created a wonderful atmosphere.

"We are already looking forward to the New Year opener in January."

The day, which marked the 11th Sunday Scramble of the year, saw traders and craftsmen on site at the hub of historic motoring and aviation open up their shops to let visitors look round.

This included 31 car clubs on site for the day and more than 30 dedicated restoration, engineering and fabrication businesses plus the chance for people to look around the restored Second World War buildings on site.

Other units open for visitors for the first time at the Scramble included Classic Performance Engineering, Kingsbury Racing Shop and storage company Historit.

One visitor who was at the Sunday Scramble event for the first time was Bicester Town Mayor Les Sibley who was given a tour of the site by managing director Mr Geoghegan.

Mr Sibley said: "We had a brilliant day at the scramble and were kindly shown around by Mr Geoghegan to see all the classic cars and also what they have done to restore the site.

"It is a fascinating place and a fitting setting to see all the classic cars in various stages of repair.

"There were hoards of people there as well and the weather held off for the day which was good.

"It was also great to see the apprenticeship courses that they run on the site which seems to be going from strength to strength."

As Bicester Heritage continues to expand and restore the Second World War base the visitors to the latest scramble event were also able to enjoy the new cafe which has opened on site.

The Sunday Scramble season drew to an end in a successful fashion and organisers are now looking forward to its return next year on Sunday, January 7.
