A STRETCH of the A34 shut overnight after a mobile crane broke down and spilt hydraulic fluid onto the road.
Highways England announced shortly after 8pm last night that the crane, which sparked traffic tailbacks as far as Abingdon after breaking down in East Ilsley, required road closure before it could be recovered.

According to its @HighwaysEAST account it closed the main trunk road at about 10pm before reopening at 1am.
The Oxford Mail's traffic feed reported that the slick had pooled across a 200-metre stretch of road, which might need resurfacing.
One lane of the southbound carriageway shut after the breakdown at about 2.30pm yesterday, and drivers were still queuing back past Didcot at 7pm.
At rush hour congestion piled back towards Abingdon, with delays of up to 40 minutes.
