A PROMINENT Liberal Democrat councillor in Oxfordshire has urged party supporters to take advantage of a perceived crisis in the Conservative Party to oust Oxford West and Abingdon MP Nicola Blackwood and "win back" her hotly-contested seat.

Oxfordshire County Councillor and Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Banbury John Howson made his call to arms yesterday in a statement headed: "Campaign now to win Oxford West and Abingdon back".

He wrote: "Many people in Oxford and across the rest of the constituency feel let down by a Tory Government that has badly misjudged the state of the nation.

"In Oxfordshire, the Lib Dems are the main challenger to the Tories and now is the time to prepare for a possible general election in the autumn.

"For all those who voted to 'remain' on Thursday, and for those that care about the future of Oxfordshire, however they voted, now is the time to tell the Tories, we believe in a decent, tolerant and international society."

Mr Howson made his impassioned plea two days after David Cameron announced he would be resigning as Prime Minister following his failure in the EU referendum campaign, and political commentators started counting off a list of potential successors.

Former Henley MP Boris Johnson has been named as the bookies' favourite, with Oxford bookmaker BetFred offering odds of 4/5.

A Facebook event page has called on Oxford Remain supporters to join a protest rally in Broad Street tomorrow night at 5.30pm.
