SMOKE billowed from a house in Bicester last night after a set of curtains were set on fire by a lamp.

Fire crews were called to the house in Browning Drive just after 9pm by the bungalow's owner, who discovered the fire when they arrived to check on ongoing renovations to the house.

Firefighters from Bicester Fire Station got into the house wearing breathing apparatus and found ther fire had been started by some curtains being left on a lamp in the dining room.

They used a hose reel to put the fire and air fan to remove any smoke.

The owner was checked over by paramedics as a precaution.

Crew manager Dougie Whitford said the fire had been caused by a timer on the lamp which the curtains had been placed on.

When turned on the heat from the lightbulb set fire to the curtains.

Station manager Julian Green said: "I would like to remind people to take great care and not place items on top of lamps or lights, as they do get hot and can set fire to combustible materials.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everybody to ensure they have working smoke alarms fitted to each level of their homes, to give early warning and to protect the escape route out of the house."
