A 79-year-old woman was pushed over in her home after she caught a frauster trying to steal from her.

Police said the man visited her property in Seacourt Road, Botley, at about 12.20pm yesterday and claimed to be from a charity.

He had telephoned the elderly woman earlier to pre-arrange the sham appointment, but when he arrived presented no identification.

After being let in, he asked to go to the bathroom but was discovered minutes later in the bedroom and when challenged pushed the woman over.

She escaped and asked a neighbour for help.

Police described the man as white, aged between 50 and 55, with short grey hair, blue or green eyes and about 5ft 7ins tall.  He was wearing a t-shirt, jumper, grey flannel trousers and black shoes and carried a clip board.

Det Con Matthew Napper said: “This was a well planned incident and I would warn anyone who may receive calls from charities to verify these and certainly not let anyone into their home without proper ID.

“The victim is understandable very shaken by this incident and she showed great bravery and resource to free herself and seek help.
