TWO musicians have decided to ‘stick it to the man’ in true Jack Black style in North Oxfordshire.

Local artists Jack Little and Miles Davies, both 22, are inspiring rising young rockers to emulate the stars of Hollywood movie School of Rock.

The performing pair – who have been friends for 17 years – hope to “bring the music scene back to Bicester” and give opportunities to youngsters that they did not have.

Self-taught percussionist Mr Davies, from Kings End, said: “When me and Jack were younger we never had this sort of opportunity.

“We would have loved something like this junior rock school.

“I originally got into music because I could not focus in school and I have also had ADHD.

“I needed something to channel that creativity into and started teaching myself. It was very challenging at the beginning, but once I had got the basics and worked with other people it started building up.”

The pair now hold weekly sessions – through a leadership programme with charity OYAP, which works with young people in the county – for children to learn how to rock out.

Nine-year-old rocker Leo Luck, from Bure Park, said: “I have always wanted to be in a band and these lessons have helped me with my guitar playing and drums.

“I like the guitar because it sounds awesome and drumming is fun because you can do anything.

“Jack and Miles are really good.”

As band members themselves – both together and individually – the guys teach youngsters between eight and 12-years-old on instruments such as drums, bass guitars, ukuleles and vocals.

Mr Little, from Glory Farm, said: “Our objective is to bring the music scene back to Bicester for the new generation coming through.

“There is a lack of events here and people don’t seem to go to gigs as much any more.

“We make sure everyone has instruments and teach them how to work together in a band.

“We will lead up to a showcase and we hope, make an album for the children to take home as well.”

The rock school sessions run every Friday from 4pm to 5.30pm at OYAP Trust base in the Courtyard Youth Arts Centre in Launton Road.

The duo hope to continue to expand as membership is currently packed out. Mr Davies added: “There’s no more room at the moment but hopefully we will be expanding into another day.”
