TWO people died in a car crash on the M40 last night, police have announced.

One lane of the motorway southbound is still closed this morning between junctions nine and ten in north Oxfordshire as police investigate what happened.

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Hannah Jones said: “At 8.45pm, a black Vauxhall Astra was travelling southbound between junctions 10 and 9 when the driver lost control and the vehicle left the road, coming to a stop on the nearside embankment.

“Two occupants, the driver and passenger of the vehicle, died at the scene.”

Neither person has been formally identified and their families have not yet been informed, she said.

It brings the death toll in the past 24 hours on the county's roads to four.

The force appealed for anyone who might have more information to get in touch by calling 101.

Drivers reported queues up to 13 miles long leading up to the collision scene last night.

Earlier this year the Government announced the number of accidents on the M40 had prompted it to review of the motorway's safety.
