CHILTERN Railways will start work on a new train station in Bicester Town this week.

The station in the centre of Bicester was closed in February to develop a new £130 million rail route between Oxford and London.

Work on the new Bicester Town Station, which will begin tomorrow, will include two new platforms and a car park.

Managing director of Chiltern Railways, Rob Brighouse, said the new project “will make Bicester one of the best connected places in the UK.”

Mr Brighouse added: “We strongly believe that this project will open up exciting opportunities for the region both in terms of employment prospects for residents and for the visitor economy.”

Services from the revamped Bicester Town station will call at Oxford Parkway, a new station built between Kidlington and Oxford, before travelling to London Marylebone station.

The station is expected to open in September 2015 and the new route to London Marylebone should open in Spring 2016.

Work on the new route was announced in May this year after Summertown resident Sean Feeney lost a High Court battle to halt the project on environmental grounds.

It was announced earlier this month that Bicester is to become a Garden City under £100m plans unveiled by Deputy PM Nick Clegg.

The first phase will be in line with the Local Plan, which outlines the building of 10,000 new homes at the north west Bicester eco-town, Graven Hill and south west Bicester, between 2014 and 2031.
