THERE was pumpkin fun across the county over the weekend as people young and old geared up for Halloween.

Millets Farm Centre, Frilford, hosted a pick your own pumpkin event, which let children get their hands dirty.

Six-year-old Callum Liebermann from Cowley went pumpkin picking with his sister Amber, three, and dad Peter.

Callum said: “I had a really good day, I liked picking the pumpkins and I had a fun time.”

At the Oxford Botanic Garden the pumpkins were already picked and set up for visitors to enjoy as part of the annual seasonal displays.

Trainee botanical horticulturalist Ness Newman said gardeners had tried something different after growing a giant pumpkin last year.

She said: “Visitors are loving the display, it has been photographed a lot because of the autumnal colouring coming up to Halloween.

“It’s all part of our autumn activities. We are running a wildlife garden event for kids from 11am to 1pm tomorrow when they can learn to make feeders and learn about garden wildlife.”

And at the offices of mental health charity Restore, external relations manager Gemma Humphrey posed with pumpkins grown in the charity’s allotments at Elder Stubbs.

She said: “We support people in their journey of recovering and to get well.

“Gardening is an important part of that, being out in the fresh air and working together as part of a team.

“Since it is autumn we’ve grown pumpkins this time and used parts of the pumpkins that are normally thrown away for things like pumpkin tart.”
