A WINTER wonderland descended on the county yesterday morning as the cold snap began in earnest.

Oxfordshire was adorned with white as fog and frost painted a picturesque view, captured by Oxford Mail readers and photographers.

Our picture desk assistant Neil Braggins couldn’t resist getting his camera out to capture a frosty morning on Port Meadow

The fog continued last night and this morning as the landscape was transformed.

The cold brought out the county’s gritters as a team of 30 workers were set to tackle 1,200 miles of Oxfordshire’s roads last night.

Oxfordshire County Council’s team were poised to grit all but two of the A, B and C roads in the county, the equivalent distance of London to Iceland.

The M40, A34 and A43 are handled by the national highways agency and the council’s gritters were also out on Sunday night.

County council spokesman Paul Smith said: “The county council gritted all A-roads, B-roads and some C-roads as it does every time a decision is taken to undertake a gritting run.

“Decisions are based on forecast road surface temperatures.”

He added that the decision to grit the county’s roads was made every afternoon during the winter.

The cold snap is set to continue in the coming days with lows of 2C this morning and highs of 6C tonight.

Tomorrow will be 7C and 8C throughout the day, the Met Office said, but the county is expected to be hit with showers throughout the afternoon and evening.

The Met Office issued a severe fog warning from 7pm last night to 10am today.
