Strong winds will hit Oxfordshire on Tuesday as the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo hit the UK.

The Met Office has warned gales could be possible on Tuesday and has issued a yellow severe weather warning - meaning people should be aware.

Hurricane Gonzalo crushed trees, flattened power lines and damaged Bermuda's main hospital during an hours-long battering of the island today.

It is now making its way across the Atlantic and will reach the UK on Monday, though it will no longer be hurricane strength.

It is likely to bring with it heavy rain and strong winds on Monday night, but the Met Office said the strongest winds would be between midnight Monday and 3pm Tuesday.

A spokesman added: "A period of very strong winds is expected on Tuesday as a low pressure system tracks across northern UK from the west.

"Whilst strong winds and heavy rain are likely on Monday night the strongest winds are expected as the rain clears eastwards and winds veer northwesterly through Tuesday morning . Gales are possible inland with severe gales possible around exposed coasts.

"The public should be aware of the potential for significant disruption to travel and difficult driving conditions. "
