A COMMUNITY football tournament has become the latest in a string of events to be cancelled due to the wet weather.
Waterlogged pitches and sports fields have scuppered the Ox Cup 2012 tournament, Witney Relay for Life fundraising event and a number of school sports days.
Meanwhile, other events are implementing contingency measures. The Ox Cup 2012 football tournament, due to take place this weekend, was cancelled because of the sodden pitch at Cowley Marsh Park. PSCO Torran O’Dowda, one of the organisers, said: “I’m disappointed. Because it’s a marsh, it sucks up the water, and as a footballer myself I know that makes for horrible playing conditions.”
The Witney Relay for Life was due to take place last weekend but the Witney Rugby Club on Hailey Road is sodden. The organisers of the 24-hour relay walk, which raises money for Cancer Research UK, yesterday announced they were unable to rearrange the event.
St Nicolas CE Primary School in Abingdon had to abandon its school sports day for a second time on Tuesday because the field was still too rain-soaked.
So far this July, Oxfordshire has seen 78.2ml of rain, almost double the average 40.6ml for the whole month.
