AN intrepid father and son are planning to get on their bikes and cycle 1,000 miles from one end of the UK to the other.

James Arnold, 42, and his 14-year-old son Joe will tackle the Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride to raise cash for charity Action Duchenne.

The pair have been training for the past four months and will ride about 50 miles a day for 20 days without a back-up vehicle.

They will set off on Saturday, July 7, and plan to stay in youth hostels, bed and breakfasts and a wooden pod in Cornwall along the route.

Graphic designer Mr Arnold, from Church Street, Bicester, said: “I’ve loved cycling for as long as I can remember, so it’s great to see that Joe has also been bitten by the cycling bug.

“I’m extremely proud of him, not only for wanting to attempt such a physically demanding ride, but also for having the drive and enthusiasm to get out and train in all weathers.

“I’m sure it will be a journey that we’ll both remember for the rest of our lives.

The biggest trip they had previously completed was a 240-mile cycle ride from Bicester to York, which took four days.

Joe, a pupil at Bicester Community College, said: “I know that it will be tough, but I’m up for the challenge and it’s for a great cause.”

The pair hope to raise £1,000 for charity Action Duchenne, which supports people with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. They were inspired after a family friend’s two sons were diagnosed with the condition.
