PEOPLE from nations across the world were officially welcomed as British citizens by the Duke of Kent yesterday.

The Duke was joined at the naturalisation ceremony, held at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, by the palace’s owner the Duke of Marlborough, and the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, John Harwood.

Among those who were made citizens at the event were Jittu Abraham, his wife Swapna and their 17-month old son Axcel and their five-year-old daughter Angelin, who live in Greater Leys.

The family, who live in Greater Leys, moved from India to Oxford in 2005.

Mrs Jittu, a staff nurse at the John Radcliffe Hospital, said the family were extremely proud to become British citizens. She added: “It was really a fantastic day. The Duke of Kent was very nice and wished us all the best for the future.”

I would like to wish them all the best and wonder if they are planning on staying in the UK after they reach retirement. If not I would like to inform them that if they return to their native India to retire, then their pension will be frozen even though they will have completed enough payments into the N.I. fund (which are mandatory) to qualify for the full pensionwhatever it is at that time. However, it will never increase ! I wonder if they were told that ? So eventually , unless they provide for themselves by having another pension and savings, their future back home will be poverty. This is the situation for many pensioners who have retired to certain countries abroad which are mainly the Commonwealth countries. The government sees fit to rob these pensioners for going to the wrong country or at least a country not of their choosing but anywhere in the EU or the USA they will get the annual uprating. You could not make this blatant discrimination up could you but David Cameron supports it.
So much for his fairness for pensioners.
