Disabled campaigners want more parking spaces

BLUE badge holders say more disabled parking spaces are needed after the county's transport chief rejected small-scale expansion plans this week.

Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet member for transport Rodney Rose decided against extending disabled parking places in certain areas of Bicester and Chipping Norton.

But Gwynneth Pedler, of disability campaign group Oxfordshire Unlimited, said: “There never are enough places for the disabled. We would like to see more of them nearer to the city centre.

Mr Rose, pictured inset, made the decision not to provide more disabled parking bays in Moor Pond Close in Bicester, and Middle Row in Chipping Norton, at his delegated decisions meeting on Wednesday.

But plans for an additional bay in Woodfield in Banbury were approved.

Meanwhile a consultation into disabled parking near Lower Market Place, Chipping Norton, is being carried out.

Disabled parking should be allocated on a pro rata basis. Simply do the calculation of need to spaces available, the resultant indicates the spaces required. No decisions required.

In my experience, many disabled badge holders park wherever they want regardless of the danger to road users.

It's not just the disabled who could do with more parking in Oxford.

Must be joking....most blue badge users I see these days, are youngsters using their mum/dad/grandparents badge. The system is so subject to abuse, it's shocking. We could also think about making some disabled spaces smaller to create more spaces, but that would annoy the huge number of brand new 4x4 and Mercedes owners that I see using their badges.

Simple. Make them display the photo on the permit and if that person is not being carried in the vehicle take the permit away. Either these permits are being forged or are being given away willy nilly. If one is disabled how can one drive low down sports cars or high up 4x4's?

To make more disabled parking available, they need to tighten the rules on who is eligible, along with harsh penalties for those using badges inappropriately.

I know one person who is very deserving of a badge who doesn't want to claim disability benefits (doesn't need the money) so they won't give him a blue badge, and I know of two people who have genuine blue badges who clearly don't need them, and use them for easy free parking.

Too right, I've got a couple of mates with minor historic injuries who both ride motorbikes with no difficulty. This entitles them to blue badges, which are handed out like sweets.

They should be restricted to those with a genuine difficulty in walking more than 100 metres or so.

Blue badges are issued by the council and are nothing to do with Incapacity Benefit.

The usual criteria is that your doctor says in writing that you can't walk 50 meters without pain or needing to rest.
