A court case has ruled it is unlawful to record passenger conversations in taxis.

Oxford City Council wants drivers to install video and audio recording systems to potentially provide evidence in criminal cases.

But in the October case – Southampton City Council v Kevin May – Southampton Crown Court ruled it was disproportionate and a violation of privacy.

Council spokesman Louisa Dean said: “We need to take the time to consider it before we can make any decision regarding plans to introduce CCTV in taxis.”
