THE challenge is on for Bicester's town mayor, who has pledged to strap on his walking boots and take to the streets for charity.

Les Sibley is putting his best foot forward for fundraising this year as he attempts to walk hundreds of miles around the town.

It is all part of his fundraising efforts to help support this year's chosen charities, which are Bicester Foodbank, Auditory Verbal, The Hummingbird Cancer Support Centre and Victim Support.

Mr Sibley said: "Not only will it help me to get fit and healthy but I intend to use the new blue lines as part of the town's healthy routes.

"If anyone sees me along the way they can always come and join me."

The new blue lines mark out routes to walk and cycle around the town.

The mayor started his journey on Tuesday and walked 10.1 miles around the town with support of local rambler Norman Smith.

Mr Sibley hopes to completed the fundraising feat over the next nine months.

He added: "I have been challenged by Norman to get fit and healthy by walking, in the first instance, 603-miles, which is the equivalent of walking from Land's End to John O'Groats.

"Plus if I manage to complete 1,001 miles Norman is prepared to double his donation to the cause."

Residents can expect to see Mr Sibley pacing the streets around Bicester over the coming months as he tots up the miles for charity.

He is hoping to collect donations along the way by taking a sponsorship form with him and gaining supporters as he goes.

People will be able to pledge their donations as Mr Sibley passes through the town.

Alternatively, those who want to support him can get in touch with Bicester Town Council to donate that way.

All money raised will go towards support the four local charities.
